Galvanized sheet process and common grades

I. Definition

Galvanized sheet, also known as galvanized steel sheet, refers to a layer of metallic zinc being plated on the surface of low-carbon steel base plates (such as cold-rolled sheets and hot-rolled sheets) to prevent the steel sheets from corroding and rusting.

II. Main Production Processes

According to the differences in galvanizing processes, they are mainly divided into two categories:

1.Hot-dip galvanizing

Feature:

The coating is relatively thick (typically 40-200 μm), with excellent corrosion resistance and a long service life (up to 20-50 years).

The surface features zinc granules (including large zinc granules, small zinc granules, and no zinc granules), and its aesthetic quality is relatively average.

The cost is relatively low and it is the most widely used galvanizing method.

Main standards: GB/T 2518, ASTM A653, JIS G3302.

2. Electro-galvanizing

Feature:

The coating is thin (typically 3-20 μm), uniform and smooth, with excellent surface quality.

The corrosion resistance is average and not as good as hot-dip galvanizing, but it is easy to undergo subsequent processing (such as painting, phosphating).

It has good processing formability and welding performance.

The cost is usually higher than that of hot-dip galvanizing.

Main standards: GB/T 15675, ASTM A879.

III.  Brand

Common grades (taking the Chinese standard as an example):

DC51D+Z (SGCC): Ordinary commercial-grade hot-dip galvanized sheet.

DC52D+Z (SGC340): Hot-dip galvanized sheet for mechanical clamping.

DC53D+Z (SGC490): The structure is made of hot-dip galvanized sheet.

DC54D+Z (SGC570): High-strength steel hot-dip galvanized sheet.

SECC: Commonly used grades of electro-galvanized sheet metal.

  Silicon steel, also known as electrical steel, can be divided into two major categories: oriented silicon steel and non-oriented silicon steel. Oriented silicon steel is produced through special processing techniques, where the body-centered cubic crystal lattice of the steel plate is aligned parallel to the rolling direction and the surface is parallel to the rolling surface, thus forming the GOSS structure. In contrast, the crystal grains of non-oriented silicon steel are generally arranged in a disordered structure. Therefore, oriented silicon steel is mainly used to manufacture transformers that operate in a stationary state and require anisotropy, while non-oriented silicon steel is mainly used to manufacture motors that operate in a running state and require isotropy.

What are the characteristics of 0.2mm grain-oriented silicon steel?

0.2mm grain-oriented silicon steel is a kind of soft magnetic material commonly used in electrical equipment such as motors and transformers.

  1. Basic Characteristics
    Thickness: 0.2mm. The thinner thickness helps to reduce eddy current losses.
    Non-oriented: The magnetic properties are basically the same in all directions, suitable for applications such as rotating motors.
    High magnetic permeability: It is easy to magnetize and demagnetize, improving energy efficiency.
    Low iron loss: It performs well in high-frequency applications, reducing energy loss.
  2. Main Applications
    Motors: Such as household appliances, industrial motors, and electric vehicle drive motors.
    Transformers: Small transformers, high-frequency transformers, etc.

Acid plating production line hot-dip galvanized products

Baowu’s hot-dip galvanized steel plates and steel strips differ from traditional cold-base galvanized products. The thickness of the hot-base non-flowered galvanized steel plates and strips produced by ESP ranges from 0.6mm to 4.0mm, and the zinc layer weight is 60 g/m2 to 920 g/m2.

These hot-base galvanized steel plates and strips can replace some cold-base galvanized products, truly achieving “replacing cold with heat”. Hot-base galvanized steel plates and strips not only meet the conventional size accuracy, surface quality, and stamping formability requirements of cold-base galvanized products, but also have the characteristics of strong zinc layer adhesion, good weldability, and high strength.

Currently, this product has been widely applied in the building materials, home appliances, vehicles and ships, livestock, packaging, mechanical and electrical, photovoltaic and other industries.

 

Selection of steel profiles

Different shapes of steel sections play different roles in the structure, and the appropriate shape can effectively enhance the overall performance of the project:

  • H-shaped steel: The flange is wide and has strong load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for supporting heavy loads.
  • Channel steel: Lightweight and cost-effective, it is suitable for supporting secondary structures.
  • Angel steel: L-shaped design, enhancing the stability of corners and truss structures.
  • Profile tubes: Fashionable in appearance, highly resistant to torsion, suitable for modern architecture.
  • Steel sheet piles: They can interlock with each other to form a protective wall, and are suitable for flood control and maritime engineering projects.
    According to the project requirements, select the steel profiles appropriately.
